Choose Life License Plate Design Sends Message of Hope in Darkness

OMAHA, NE – Today at Bethlehem House in Omaha, Governor Pete Ricketts unveiled the design for the new “Choose Life” license plate, available on January 1,2018. The plates were made possible by LB46, passed by the state Legislature earlier this year. The Governor was joined by Lt. Governor Mike Foley, State Senator Dan Watermeier, representatives from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Students for Life and Bethlehem House, and other pro-life leaders.

“Life is precious, and public officials have a duty to stand up and be a voice for the unborn and most vulnerable,” said Governor Ricketts. “As Governor, I have worked to support initiatives that protect and strengthen the culture of life that Nebraskans embody. With the creation of this plate, Nebraska joined twenty-nine other states that offer ‘Choose Life’ license plates.”

The plate design, which was chosen from a number of different designs, depicts a mother and child walking into a Nebraska sunset, offering a message of hope even when life may seem hopeless.
The Nebraska Catholic Conference expects this plate will encourage citizens to defend life in our state, as well as offer a message of compassion and kindness to anyone in need. Whether someone in faced with a crisis pregnancy, extreme financial burden, or any kind of difficult uncertainty, they might see this plate and be filled with hope.

“With the new ‘Choose Life’ license plate, Nebraskans have an opportunity to put our deeply held pro-life values into action,” said Tom Venzor, Executive Director of the Nebraska Catholic Conference. “This image will be a daily reminder for us to defend life and offer hope to those in most need.”

Senator Watermeier, who introduced LB46, tirelessly defended the bill and helped it to overcome six filibusters during floor debate in the Spring. “Every community has a responsibility to guard, protect, and cherish human life,” Watermeier stated. “Today, Nebraska takes another important step in showing our deep value and respect for human life through the beautiful ‘Choose Life’ plates you see today.”
Funds from Choose Life license plate sales will go to benefit the TANF, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, program.
